Legal documents relating to gambling in Nacogdoches County, Texas : District Court, Nacogdoches County, Tex., 1838-1839.

Sixteen manuscript legal documents, written in several unidentified hands, recorded at the Republic of Texas District Court in Nacogdoches County. The documents, consisting of six indictments, nine warrants, and one motion, relate to gambling cases, including operation of faro, monte, and billiards games. Indictments are present for Juan Ariola, John McDougal, David M. Shropshire, Leonard H. Mabbit, Ephraim Tally, and Babtiste Chirino. Indictments are dated during March term, 1838, and are signed by N.B. Thompson, district attorney pro tem and by James H. Starr, grand jury foreman. Some are also annotated with trial verdicts. Warrants, dated in Sep, 1838, and signed by Hayden Arnold, pro tem clerk, are present for Ariola, McDougal, Shropshire, Francisco Cordoway, William Daukworth, George Bondies, and Jonathan Park. Warrants refer to District Court proceedings to be held at the Old Stone Fort in Nacogdoches; annotations on versos indicate whether warrants were executed. A motion to arrest judgement in the case of Daukworth and Bondies, filed in Apr, 1839, is signed "Mayfield," attorney for the defendents. A few documents are briefly annotated in manuscript by a former owner, possibly Alex Dienst.
